The Scala Theatre was situated on the corner of Main Road and Bowwood Road Claremont, a suburb in the south of Cape Town. It was designed by architect William Hood Grant, built in 1937 with seating for 900 patrons. The entrance was on Bowwood Road. The Scala Theatre was of similar design to that of the Savoy Theatre in Rosebank.

In the late-1960’s the Scala Theatre was renovated and re-opened in 1969 as the Protea Theatre, with the foyer re-positioned and the cinema entrance now on the Main Road. By 1985 the Protea Theatre had been converted to a 3 screen cinema and renamed Protea 1,2,3.

The building housing the cinema was demolished in 1998 and an office block erected on the site.
