The Kinema was opened 18th July 1914. The proscenium was 25 feet wide, and the stage 25 feet deep, and there were two dressing rooms. Around 1930 it was equipped with a British Thomson Houston(BTH) sound system. It occasionally staged variety shows.

In the mid-1950’s CinemaScope was installed and the proscenium was widened to 40 feet. In the 1960’s the Kinema also boasted a restaurant for the convenience of its patrons. Always independently operated, the Kinema was closed around 1966.

The empty building was still standing in June 1985, but has since been demolished and the site is now occupied by offices for the Free Press.
