West 5th Street Drive-In

The West 5th Street Drive-In opened on May 15, 1953. The car capacity was 300 cars. The drive-in was still listed as open in the mid-1970’s. There is a residence where the drive-in once stood.

Motion Picture Herald, April 4, 1953: “Robert Kehr is building a 350-car drive-in, with room for expansion, at Ogallala, Neb., where he also operated theatres.”

Motion Picture Herald, May 2, 1953: “Robert and Al Kehr, owner of two conventional theatres in Ohallala (sic), Neb., will open their 350-car drive-in there about May 15, using RCA.”

Boxoffice, Sept. 17, 1979: “Mid-America Theatres, headed by Craig Stout, has taken over the operation of the Prairie Theatre and the West 5th Street Drive-In Theatre in Ogallala, Neb. from Evergreen Theatres of Colorado which is headquartered in Loveland.”

Boxoffice, April 24, 1967: “The marquee and surrounding shrubbery were destroyed by a brush fire at the West Fifth Street Drive-In at Ogallala, Neb.”

Boxoffice, Oct. 9, 1967: “Evergreen Theatres of Colorado, headed by Vern Peterson, has taken over operation of the Prairie Theatre and West 5th Street Drive-In from long-time exhibitor Robert Kehr, who took over the operation of the units from his father many years ago.”
