Oxford Cinema

Located in the suburb of Undercliffe, 2 miles north east of the City centre. The Oxford Hall Picture Palace opened on 9th April 1914. It had an attractive façade and seats inside the auditorium were on a single floor. By 1930 a Western Electric(WE) sound system had been installed and it had been re-named Oxford Picture House.

It was re-named Oxford Cinema in 1953 and it closed on Sunday 11th September 1955 for alterations, carried out by Modernisation Ltd. It reopened on Monday 17th October. It had been re-decorated, re-seated, re-heated and re-carpeted. It had a new panoramic screen, which was later adapted for CinemaScope.

From 13th December 1962 bingo was introduced three days a week. Final closure for films came on Saturday 8th January 1966 with the cinema screening “The Three Stooges Go West” & Sonja Henie in “Hello London”, and it became a full time Top Flight Bingo Club from 27th January 1966. The independently operated Oxford Bingo Club is still operating in 2020, but was closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic on 16th March 2020. The building was gutted by an arson fire at midnight on 28th February 2021. The roof of the building was totally destroyed. By summer of 2023 the building had been demolished.
