Highway Drive-In

Located on Fleming Avenue (formerly Berwick Street). The Highway Drive-In opened on 24th October 1955 with “The Greatest Show on Earth”. The drive-in was twinned on 6th September 1985 opening with (screen 1)– “Cannonball Run 2” and “Mad Max 3 Beyond Thunderdome”, and (screen 2) – “Blame it on Rio” and “Rambo First Blood Part 2”. The drive-in closed on 19th June 1994 with (screen 1)– “Maverick” and “The Assassin” and (screen 2)– “Man’s Best Friend” and “Ace Ventura”. The site was sold for 2.5 million dollars(Australian), and is now a housing estate and the Highway Motel.

The first screen was 42 feet high and 50 feet wide. The top of the screen was 60 feet from the ground. Size of second screen built later on unknown(possibly the same as the first screen?)?

I remember seeing “Married to the mob” and Air America" at this drive-in with my youth group in a hired double decker bus parked over at the side of(screen 1?).

There may still be a post that had a direction sign for the Highway Drive-in on top of it at the southwest corner of fleming Avenue and Burton Street(minus the sign on top)?

There may still be the fence and trees along the Leach Highway side of the former Drive-in theatre?
