Princess Theatre, LeRoy, IL

Viewing: Photo | Street View

The Princess Theatre opened in downtown LeRoy in 1916 as a silent movie house, switching to sound movies only in 1931. The theater continued to show movies until 1982. It briefly served afterwards as a country and western music venue, but stood vacant since the mid-1980’s.

Though the old Princess Theatre fell into serious disrepair after closing, including part of the auditorium’s ceiling collapsing and the loss of all of its seats and screen, it was purchased by new owners in 2003.

After a major renovation project, the Princess Theatre reopened in August of 2004, with the remake of “Around the World in 80 Days”.

Anybody know if the Princess has been sold, or what?

The Princess theatre was bought by my father in November of 2006. We had someone running the Theatre until July 30, 2007 when they backed out. Now our family runs the Theatre.

It’s great to hear you are keeping the Princess going. It’s too bad I wasn’t near by, I would love to operate that jewel. I had asked the previous owner if I could operate it for him. I briefly owned the Princess Theatre back in the 80’s. It seemed after I bought it, everything just went wrong, and I never had a chance to get her up and going. I had some big plans. I do have the original blueprints, though. They are really brittle. I would like to preserve them. I had always wanted to restore one of those original projectors, though, but just never got the chance. I wish you the VERY BEST of luck, and if I can help, calling upon my 20+ years of exhibition experience, please do. It’s been a lifetime labor of love for me, and I love to see that others share it. Keep LeRoy’s big silver smile, smiling!

Yes, the Princess is still open but it looks as if it shows movies only Friday through Sunday. Unfortunately, today it’s one of only a very few open businesses in Leroy.
