Located in Houghton le Spring, County Durham. The New Grand Theatre was built on the site of the Gaiety Theatre, adjacent to the Empire Theatre on Newbottle Street. It opened on 21st April 1930. It presented films, drama and variety shows. The proscenium was 30ft wide, the stage was 30ft deep and there were six dressing rooms. It was owned by John Lishmen. It was soon equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system. In 1952 it was taken over by the Newcastle based Essoldo chain and was operating as the Grand Theatre. It was re-named Essoldo in either October 1962 or February 1963. Taken over by the Classic Cinemas chain on 2nd April 1972, it was re-named Classic. It was closed in March 1975.
The building was converted into a Dees Supermarket, later becoming a Kwik-Save supermarket and in 2015 operates as a B & M Bargains store.
