Originally opened as the Aiken Opera House in the mid-19th Century. It housed Aitken Fire Department on the first floor. In 1922 it became the Aiken Theatre, first showing silent movies and then from March 1928 talkies.

It was updated and renamed State Theatre, reopening February 2, 1932 with “Girls About Town”. On August 11, 1938, a fire in the projection box quickly spread and the theatre burned down, including the fire department.
