Empire Theatre and Gardens

The Empire Theatre and Gardens opened in 1928. The gardens were behind the Empire Theatre with the entrance off a laneway on the east side of the theatre. The screen was on the back wall along the Railway Parade side of the gardens. The Empire Gardens closed in 1957. The Empire Theatre closed after a fire in the theatre building on 21st August 1958 which was believed to have started below the stage and spread to the dress circle area, destroying and the majority of the theatre’s seating, but the shell of the building was saved and the theatre building was rebuilt as a department store for Vox Adeons(which closed in the 1980’s or 1990’s?). The Empire Gardens became the car park. The Empire Theatre building was demolished in May/June 2006. The site is now West Leederville Shopping Centre.

My younger years were very much associated with the Empire Theatre. It was a place of enchantment and delight for me – I loved going to see the wonderful films on a Friday night with my family. Such a huge part of my young life. The times I floated out the front door pretending to be Doris Day or Audrey Hepburn still caught up in the magic of the recently seen film. Such a delight. I hate to think it’s all gone but my happy happy memories will live on.
