Gaiety Cinema

In Ventnor, on the Isle of Wight, the Cinema was built in 1924 by Tom Brading, a local builder, and was distinguished by its comfort and its sliding roof, which was often opened during performances in the summer. There was a plain auditorium, with a balcony. Later named the Gaiety Cinema, it was closed during World War II, but re-opened when the nearby Rex Cinema received a direct hit from German bombs. It closed in 1946 when the Rex Cinema reopened. It was converted by the Freemasons as a Lodge; it was in this use in May 1999.

Opened in July 1924. Closed during the war but reopened apparently because the Rex had taken a hit but closed again on the Rex’s reopening in 1946.
