Carlton Cinema

In Tavistock, Devon, the Carlton Cinema opened around 1935. It was owned by E. J. and W. E. Pope, who also owned the Carlton Cinema in Okehampton. It was built in a castellated style to fit in with the existing buildings in the town.

During the height of the Blitz on nearby Plymouth during World War II, the Carlton Cinema was used as an additional rest centre for ‘refugees’ from the bombing.

The Carlton Cinema closed around 1970.

By July 2003, when I visited, the building was home to the Crown Centre, an entertainment and snooker hall. It has since been demolished.
