Premier Cinema

In the Devon town of Okehampton, the Picture Palace opened in 1915. The building was previously occupied by Cornish, a firm of drapers. The conversion was undertaken by Blatchford and Dawe.

By the 1931 Kinematograph Year Book the owner was S. Newcombe.

By the 1940 edition the cinema, under the same owner, had been renamed Premier Cinema. By the 1953 edition the owner was A. M. Newcombe. (A point of clarification: The cinema’s address was still being shown as Lodge Road. That road has subsequently been renamed Market Street.)

The Premier Cinema was closed in November 1963. The building was initially used as a supermarket, then, by 1998, a nightclub called Nero’s. It was Nero’s when I visited, in July 2003, but more recently it has been home to Toast Coffee House.

The building is almost directly opposite the ‘new’ Carlton Cinema.
