This theater originally opened as the Varsity Theatre in 1927. It became part of the Commonwealth Theatre chain in 1955 and lasted thru 1960. When it reopened in February of 1967 is was known as the New Film Arts. The Film Arts closed after the summer on May 2, 1972 and never reopened as a motion picture theater.

Between 1972 and 1991 it was used for various functions, such as craft shows and antiques. In 1991 it reopened as a night club called the Blue Note Theatre. The theater has been kept in good shape by the operators but has never been a motion picture theater under its current operators.

The 1963 IMPA still shows the Varsity as part of the Commonwealth Amusements chain. Other Commonwealth theaters in Columbia at that time were the Hall, Missouri, Uptown and Broadway Drive-In.
