Gerald Hardy opened the Mayfair Theatre on July 17, 1947. The Fresno Bee said that it was the former post theatre for servicemen stationed at the Fresno County fairgrounds. The 850-seat theatre had been completely renovated and redecorated and would have a second-run policy. At the time Hardy’s other houses in Fresno were Hardy’s, the Fulton and the Lyceum. In 1961 it was sold to Art Theater Inc. and renamed the Fine Art and opened on December 24th.

As a naughty teenager, I remember seeing “racy” European movies at the Fine Arts Theatre, though I do not remember its International and Mayfair Theatres incarnations.

Ihe International Theatre was also known as the Mayfair and Fine Arts Theatre during its tenure as a motion picture theatre.
