Palace Cinema

Located in Stonehouse, South Lanarkshire. According to the Scottish Cinemas database, the Palace Cinema opened in 1914, with seating for 600.

The 1914 Kinematograph Year Book lists a Picture Lounge, while the 1931 edition lists a Town Hall Picture House, both without any further details. I am not aware of a third cinema in the town, in addition to the Palace Cinema and the Rex Cinema.

It is not known when the Palace Cinema closed. It was not listed in the 1940 Kinematograph Year Book, so it most likely closed when the Rex Cinema opened in January 1937.

I gather that permission was granted for the building to be demolished around 2003. However, when I visited, in March 2009, it was home to Top Grade Windows, which appears to continue to date (January 2016). It was demolished by 2020.

Further to my narrative above, the Street View image indicates that the building is now boarded up.

Google Streetview dated September 2020 shows the building gone completely.
