Regal Cinema

In Dumbarton, East Dunbartonshire, Wingate’s Picture Palace was opened in September 1910 by Joseph Wingate. The front rows of seats closest to the screen were long wooden benches.

By 1931, according to the Kinematograph Year Book, the cinema was just called the Palace Cinema (though still owned by Joseph Wingate). However, it had closed in August 1929 as a silent cinema and become the Palace Boxing Hall.

Following a refurbishment it re-opened as the Regal Cinema on 8th September 1938 with “Hell Ship Morgan”. Seating was provided for 700 on a stadium plan, which had a raised stepped section at the rear, rather than the usual overhanging balcony. It was equipped with a RCA sound system.

CinemaScope was installed in the early-1950’s, but that was not enough to prevent its closure in April 1959 when the final film was “No Time For Sargents”. The building had been compulsory purchased by the Council for redevelopment and was demolished in 1960.
