The Altona Drive-In opened on 10th August 1971 with “Walkabout”. The Altona Drive-In hoped to get cars coming across the new Westgate Bridge(construction started in 1968) being built(opening up the bayside area of to the west of Melbourne), until it collapsed during construction on 15th October 1970, and the Westgate Bridge finally opening in 1979. The tollgates on the Westgate Bridge keep people away from the Altona Drive-In(the toll was not abolished until 1985!).
The Altona Drive-In closed in October 1982. The site became an industrial area, with roads running through the ramps, the screen and snack bar and bio box remaining until 1992 when the screen was removed to the Dromana Drive-In to use as their second screen, and the snack bar and bio box demolished soon after! The removal of the screen is on You Tube(Dromana Drive-In removes the Altona Drive-In). Altona Drive-In was the last drive-in built from the ground up in Melbourne!
