Twin Open Air Drive-In

The Twin Open Air Drive-In Theatre opened on June 11, 1948 with Errol Flynn in “Silver River”. Located about four miles to the south of Midway Airport in the Chicago suburb of Oak Lawn. The two screens were called simply “The North Screen” and “The South Screen”.

In April of 1954, the theatre converted to CinemaScope and each car had two speakers to provide stereo sound for “The Robe” and “The Command”. The land values on Cicero Street continued to rise and the drive-in closed in the early-1960’s. It succumbed to a strip shopping center that still stands in the 21st Century.

The street address is accurate, but the site is within Oak Lawn IL, just barely. (Across 87th Street to the north is Burbank, and across S. Cicero Street to the east is Hometown.)

The Twin Open Air was still visible in a 1962 aerial photo but already replaced by the shopping center in the 1965 topo map.
