Esquire Cinema - July 1980

Viewing: Photo | Street View

One of the standard single screen Jerry Lewis Cinemas in Lawrence, Indiana, outside of Indianapolis it opened in August 1972. In 1973, when Jerry Lewis left the cinema group, the franchise owners established thier own circuit, United Cinemas.

The theaters were eventually sold to the Kerasotes circuit which eventually sold them off to an independent operated Heaston Theatres, which operated them as dollar cinemas.

The Esquire Cinema, located in the Esquire shopping center is closed and had been turned into a copy shop.

Grand memories can be made at even a not-so-grand theater. My memory was seeing “Gone With the Wind” at the Esquire in 1974. The Esquire wasn’t much but Tara was still Tara!

I worked there from 1982-84 during high school (what GREAT memories!) Surprised to see this listing on the internet. Looking for others who worked there (Denise Rapp, Rodney Luke, Tony Ross, Bob, Lisa Betts.. I know there are more! Where are you?) Chris LeMasters

I managed this theatre 1973-74 with United Cinema. During my tenure the theatre successful made the switch to First Run movies. I gave long time Indy theatre manager Mike Dearduff (Rick’s brother)his first theatre job.
