The 250-seat Royal Theatre opened May 31, 1930, having moved from a previous location at 708 Buffalo Street where it also had a seating capacity for 250.

According to the Canton Herald, in 1939 the Royal Theatre was sold to S.G. Fry and A.D. McPhail. Mr. Fry owned theatres in Brownsboro, Grand Saline, Tyler, Van, and Victor. The theatre was then modernized and reopened on November 22, 1939 as the first Plaza Theatre in Canton.

The Royal/Plaza Theatre closed in 1946 when the new Plaza Theatre opened on Buffalo Street.
