Yale Theatre

Viewing: Photo | Street View

Another one of the many neighborhood theaters in the densley populated South St. Louis. It was located around the block from the Melvin Theatre on Chippewa and three blocks east of the Melba Theatre on Grand and Miami. The Yale was opened in 1914. It was surrounded by homes and two and four family flats, so it more or less had its built in audience. The Yale was closed in 1946.

Until a few years ago, the building served as a church, but today sits vacant.

Years of operation were 1914 to 1946.

The function on this theater should be “Church”. There are photos of the former Yale/Church here:

Actually it hasn’t been a church for a couple years now. The changing of the demographics of the neighborhood has caused some migration to the suburbs and the Yale has been boarded up for the past couple years.

Thanks for the update on this building Charles. I see that the function has already been changed to unknown.

The Yale is still shown as being in operation in the 1951 Film Daily Yearbook. Did it reopen after closing in 1946?
