Located at the northwest corner of Ocean Road and Coston Drive. The 900-seat Grand Electric Theatre was the first purpose-built cinema in South Shields. It opened on 1st June 1910 and was designed by architect J.H. Morton. Seating was provided in stalls and circle levels. On 23rd May 1929 it was equipped with a British Talking Pictures(BTP) sound system and became the first cinema in the city to screen ‘talkies’.

On 7th June 1930 it was renamed Grand Cinema. The Grand Cinema was totally destroyed by a fire on 11th March 1932 and was never rebuilt.
