Opened February 17, 2017, the Tull Family Theater was a grassroots project, which began in 2011, to bring a movie theater to Sewickley. By 2015 a fund raising efforts raised $1.5 million, all by individuals, which reached $4 million with the addition of corporate donations.
With a 2016 grant of $500,000, Thomas and Alba Tull were given the naming rights. Mr. Tull is known in the film industry as the founder of Legendary Entertainment, which was acquired by Dalian Wanda Group in 2016.
The theater’s goal is to offer contemporary, classic, independent, and documentary films. The second and fourth Saturday of each month will be devoted to Family Fun screenings such as “Harry Potter". Classic Hollywood films will be presented on the first Tuesday evening of each month.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette noted that New York-based Jeffrey Jacobs was selected to program the films, which for the first week were “LA LA Land", “Fences" and “The Eagle Huntress".
There are two screening rooms, seating 77 and 169, complemented by a 145-seat community room for live performances.
The designer of the theater is Balog Steines Hendricks & Manchester, also known as BSHM Architects, Inc.
