The Gallery Theatre opened on January 14, 1914 showing moving pictures quickly became known as the Pinehurst Theatre. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Picquet, who owned the Princess Theatre in nearby Southern Pines, took on the Pinehurst Theatre.
Updating the theatre and naming it the Carolina Theatre, the venue moved into the early-1920’s. But Picquet knew the Sandhills resort area could support a higher class theatre. He contracted to build the spectacular Pinehurst Theatre in 1923 which replaced the Carolina Theatre.
