Roxy Cinema

Located in the Charing Cross district of the town centre, at the corner of Whetstone Lane and Borough Road, with the main facade on Whetstone Lane. The Picturedrome was opened on 25th May 1911. It was designed by Southport based architectural firm Campbell & Fairhurst and the building also contained a billard hall in the basement. The proscenium was 22' wide and occasional variety was presented into the late-1930’s.

By 1937 it had been re-named Roxy Cinema and had been equipped with a British Thomson-Houston(BTH) sound system. By 1944 it had been taken over by Southam Morris and his S.M. Super Cinemas Ltd. chain. They were taken over by the Newcastle based Essoldo group on 26th August 1954. The Roxy Cinema was closed on 21st July, 1956 with Edward G. Robinson in “Illegal” and Doris Day in “It’s Magic” (Romance on the High Seas).

The building remained unused until 1962 when it re-opened as the Roxy Bingo Club which operated into the 1980’s. It was demolished in 1987.
