Osborne Theatre

This small one storey cinema was opened on Monday 7th November 1927, with “Sunshine of Paradise Alley” Performances were at 6.30 and 8.45 pm, with a children’s matinee on Saturdays, costing 2d or 3d. Primitive wooden benches were provided which were removed when dances were held.

The cinema attempted to provide sound through the Chromophone system. Sync was difficult so actors were engaged to read for the miming actors on the film. On one occasion the film finished 5 minutes before the actors! Later a Morrison sound system was installed. Known as the Bun Hut because of a bakery in the basement, the cinema lasted until 1937 then became a dance hall. In 1939 it became a works canteen for Vickers, the shipbuilders, and is seen as such in a 1986 history of Barrow theatres and cinemas.
