Springfield looks more complicated that I thought. The Motion Picture Almanacs suggest that the 350-capacity Sunset opened in late 1950s, changed its name to the Apache, then persisted into the (early?) 1970s. It’s definitely a separate drive-in from the much smaller Kar-Vu, which first appeared in the 1966 MPA and lasted until 2004.

Here are the relevant Motion Picture Almanac drive-in list mentions, listing capacity and owner where available:

  • 1960-62: Sunset, 350, Everett Toomey
  • 1963-66: Apache, 350, Doyle Smith & Bob Houch
  • 1969-76: Apache, 350
  • 1977: off the list

I see no evidence of ramps at the address that dansdriveintheater has provided which should be 29510 US-385, Springfield, CO. Nor do I see any evidence of ramps in a 1988 aerial photo at that location.

It would be helpful to see a photo of the location to know if I was looking in the right place.
