Gem Cinema

According to the Cinema Theatre Association the Alpha Cinema opened in March 1914 although most other sources seem to opt for 1911. By 1923 it had been re-named Gem Cinema, the first year I can access a Kine Year Book for. It originally had 516 seats and was equipped with a British Acoustic(BA) sound system but by the time of closure it had 395 seats and a RCA sound system. It is last listed in the directory in 1961 being run by the Merglen Cinema Company.

It has been a auto repair shop for a number of years, the current occupant having been formed in 1978 although not necessarily at this location. Some plasterwork is still visible on the ceiling.

The tyre fitters have been operating there from 1978… here’s what they gave to say on their website…. “ We’ve been running a garage at the site of the GEM cinema in Morriston, Swansea since 1978.

When we opened the garage it was owned by Freefit Services and continued that way until the whole business was sold in 2000. The managers at the time took the opportunity to undertake a management buyout of the Swansea depot and changed the name to the GEM Autocentre, taking the name from the original use of the building.”

I e uploaded another picture from the same site.
