Opened originally as the Grand Theater around 1910, it was still known as the Grand Theater in the July 29, 1916 Motography and operated by H.L. Wallick, who previously owned and operated the Ellis Theater in the Oakland neighborhood. The Grand Theater, located in the Woodlawn neighborhood on E. 63rd Street near Langley Avenue, was renamed the Plaisance Theater by early-1917. It closed by early-1929 as the March 9, 1929 Exhibitors Herald-World notes that the Plaisance Theater had closed due to bankruptcy. Not long after a butcher shop opened in the former theater and was in operation into the 1940’s. Today, the site is part of an almost continuously vacant stretch of E. 63rd Street between Cottage Grove and Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive.
