Maya Cinemas opened their fifth location May 17, 2018, with a “Deadpool” double bill and other current films. The 12-screen $20 million theatre sports 1,182 recliners, Christie laser projection on Maya’s 33x60-foot MPX screen, Dolby Atmos sound, RealD 3D, and D-Box.
Moctesuma Esparza, CEO of Maya Cinemas, interviewed in the Bakersfield Californian said the community was underserved. There hadn’t been a theater in Delano for more than 10 years with the closest being in Bakersfield about 35 miles away. 23ABC News noted Mr. Esparza is best known as an Oscar nominated film producer who worked on “Selena”, “Gettysburg”, “Milagro Beanfield War”, and more.
“This theater will be the most technologically advanced theater in the nation,” said vice president Larry Porricelli. Keeping it in the community, the theater’s general manager is Michael Armendariz, a Delano native.
Located in The Vineyard shopping destination, the cinema was developed by YK America who maintain in-house designers.
