Located in Shotton Colliery, County Durham. The Theatre Royal was opened in 1834. It had a 30ft wide proscenium and the stage was 31ft deep. There were six dressing rooms. It was given a Cinematograph Licence in 1911, and films became part of the programme. By 1922 it had become a full-time cinema. In 1930 it was equipped with a Kamm sound system and was presenting picture and variety into the mid-1930’s. In the mid-1950’s it was equipped with CinemaScope.

In the 1970’s it was running part-time bingo, with films on other nights. Eventually it became an independent full-time bingo club, but screened films during children’s school holidays (adults were also admitted).
