Cosmic Cinemas launched the first of seven planned locations on November 19, 2018. The Register-Star noted that the theatre was built inside the gutted 600-seat Cinema 3, which closed March 19, 2017, after 44 years. Bruce Mitchinson, who had operated the Cinema 3 since 1999 selected his final film, “The Last Picture Show". The new Cosmic Cinemas – Hudson retains three screens but seating is reduced to 275, with the largest auditorium holding 150.
Terrell Braly, former CEO of Alamo Drafthouse and Cinebarre, says, “We want to give the mature movie lover the experience of watching a movie the way it was meant to be. We want to provide the very best in an exceptional meal and movie experience without the distractions”. Other Cosmic Cinemas executives are Pamela Braly, formerly with Alamo Drafthouse and Cinebarre and Kris Keisling, formerly with Cinebarre.
Catering to adults, children under 17 must be accompanied by and adult and no babies, talking, or cell phones are permitted. The Cosmic Cinemas – Hudson kitchen was built in the old Angela’s Pizza next door and prepares an extensive menu, which includes beer, wine, and cocktails.
Expanding cosmically, the new chain has plans on the drawing board for two additional locations in 2018 and four more in 2019 by renovating former theater buildings. Cosmic Cinemas went broke in November 2019. It is due to reopen by an independent operator in December 2019.
