84 Drive-In

Mr. and Mrs. Philip Nickols launched the 84 Drive-In in 1952 at U.S. 84 near Texas 16 likely on a 20-year lease. When the Nickols closed the Melba Theatre in downtown Goldthwaite in 1962, the 84 Drive-In was the only show in town. They had operated the Melba Theatre since 1945 buying it from Annie Coleman. Once they built the 84 Drive-In, they operated the Melba Theatre in the cold months and the 84 Drive-In in the warm months.

The Nickols closed the Melba Theatre in 1962 because they couldn’t convert it to widescreen and were not happy with the flat films. Business fell off in the early-1970’s and they noted that the majority of the 200 speakers at the drive-in were simply not being used during the 1971 season. They did not relaunch in 1972 ending the theater’s run.
