The Elite Theatre, described as being near the clock tower, started advertising in the Bakersfield Echo in November 1912.

The theatre was located in the Morgan Building, built in 1911, on land purchased by the independently wealthy Rev. Edward Morgan of St. Paul’s Church. The building, designed by Train & Williams of Los Angeles, was situated next to the church and library.

Upon its demolition in April 1955 the Bakersfield Californian noted that before 1911, because it was rumored a saloon was going to open on the site, Rev. Morgan, a former pastor of the church decided to buy the land.

The Elite Theatre’s last advertisement appeared in the Bakersfield Californian on March 11, 1923, and on March 17 a classified notice appeared reading “must sell, will sacrifice, $1,500".
