The Illusion Theatre was an early silent cinema in San Diego just doors away from the Grand Theatre. The theatre did well with the Keystone Studio comedies from 1913 to 1915. But the theatre struggled thereafter closing twice - briefly in 1917 before getting new owners and in 1920 getting new owner, A. F. Ahrens. Ahrens was buoyed by the opening of the San Diego & Arizona Railroad and took on the Illusion renaming it the Kinema Theatre. It was still open in 1929, but had not been equipped for ‘talkies’ in 1930 and had gone from listings in 1931.
