The Mid-Way Drive-In Theatre was located one mile from Sanford, roughly midway between Opp and Andalusia on the Opp-Andalusia Road. Its screen was 40'x50' and was opened by W.F. Jackson, Jason H. Etheredge and Johnny Dee. The Mid-Way Drive-In launched July 25, 1949 with “White Savage” starring Joan Hall and Marie Montez.

In 1954, the theatre’s name became the Midway Drive-In when it was taken over by G.S. Owen who operated the Opp Drive-In. The theatre was closed November 4, 1959 at the end of the lease.

G.S. Owen retained operation of the Opp Drive-In & Dixieland Drive-In, both located in Opp, AL. He briefly reopened the Midway Drive-In for the 1961 season on April 30, 1961 and abruptly shuttered the facility on May 24, 1961 after a showing of “Female on the Beach” starring Joan Crawford. Said Owen, “After having the Midway Drive-In Theatre open for a month, I find that business is not sufficient to warrant continuation…Thanking you for your kindness and cooperation”.

Found It!

The drive-in was located at US-84 & Co Rd 65, Sanford, AL. The drive-in was on the north side of US-84 at the intersection.

Today, it is private property, but you can still barely see the outline and where the ramps stood.
