Fred DeWalt launched the silent era Grand Theatre in downtown Ponca City on January 16, 1913. It was renamed Majestic Theatre in 1915. The theatre ran the successful “Birth of a Nation” and made a headline by syncing a 1916 film to a phonograph recording for an early foray into sound film.

The theatre changed ownership several times and was owned in common with the Mission Theatre by Frank Powell in 1915 and then later by Fred Pickerel.

Pickerel focused on the Mission Theatre and Murray Theatre and closed the Majestic Theatre in 1927. It was retrofitted for radio station WBBZ’s first studio.
