Macklind Theatre

The Macklind Theatre was a small neighborhood house located a block west of Macklind Avenue. Built and opened in 1910 it was just a plain and simple theatre to take care of the neighborhood movie-goers. Single floor structure with a small entrance and the ticket booth facing the street. The Macklind Theatre closed in March 1951 and was purchased by Michael Ramaesiri and converted into an auction house. Within a year it became City Wide TV, a televison repair business which closed in the 1970’s. The Macklind Theatre was located right at the entrance to the Hill neighborhood (Italian Section of the City).

February 20, 1920, John B Lueken purchased the Macklind Theatre, 5415 Arsenal Street from Paul Steffan, a neighborhood barber. One of the first improvements was to install 350 chairs, purchased from the Wagner family who closed the Webster Theatre. The Macklind was modernized and seating capacity increased to 640. The theatre closed about 1951. — from my family history.
