Weltspiele Filmtheater #2

Located in the city centre on the site of the Weltspiele Filmtheater #1 (1924-1943) which was destroyed by Allied bombs and has its own page on Cinema Treasures. The Weltspiele Filmtheater #2 was opened in 1949 and was operated by Robert Billerbek, who also operated the Gloria Palast and the Grenzburg Lichtspiele in Hannover (They have their own pages on Cinema Treasures). The opening movie at the Weltspiele Filmtheater #2 was “Clara Schuhmanns grosse Liebe”(“Song of Love”) starring Katherine Hepburn & Paul Henreid.

In 1953 the cinema was operated by Weltspiele Filmtheater Betriebs GmbH. It was equipped with CinemaScope in 1956 and a 4-channel stereophonic sound system by Klangfilm was installed. The stage was enlarged to 16 x 6 x 10 metres. The size of the CinemaScope screen was 13 x 6.2 metres. The seats were by Baehre. In 1958 the B 8 projectors were replaced by B 12 projectors by Bauer. Many national and international film premieres took place at the Weltstpiele Filmtheater and many famous actors were on the cinema stage.

In 1962 a pair of DP 70 TODD-AO projectors by Phillips for 35mm & 70mm films were added and the sound system was enlarged to 6-channels. Around 1980 2 screens were added (seating 131 & 70). In 1994 the cinema was closed and demolished.
