Theater 707

The Empire Theatre was an X-rated house that operated in downtown Fort Worth in the “Porno Chic” era of film exhibition in the late-1960’s and into the 1970’s. The theatre’s bills often had two feature films and bonus live content. Some of the films and content landed the theatre in court but seems to have had few convictions. The theatre also went by alternative names of Cinema X at the Empire Theatre and in its final five years alternating between the 707 Theatre and Theater 707.

The 707 Theater closed on January 1, 1978 though continued as a combined entity with the existing 157 Theatre at what was 405 FM 157 in Euless. The two theatres had common ownership with Theatre 157 opening in 1975 and appearing to have closed in 1982.

As for the location of the former 707/Empire Theatre, it was demolished as part of a massive redevelopment plan which would find the neighboring, Art Deco/Moderne Aviation Building demolished in 1978 along with its retail neighbors. Those neighbors included the Palace Theatre (aka Byers Opera House) property at 113 E. 7th Street demolished in 1977 and the combination of retail stores starting at 701 Main Street which housed the 707 Theatre. The former 707 was demolished in 1978.

The entire city block at 7th Street and Main Street would become home to the skyscraper known initially as Continental Plaza. It was then renamed the UPR Plaza, then the Carter Burgess Plaza, and - as of 2012-forward - 777 Main.
