First mentioned as a future site of a Jerry Lewis Cinema in 1972, ground was broken on August 7, 1973 for a new automated cinema in the already-existing Kahului Shopping Center, itself built in 1951. But by the time that Lewis franchisee, Halls of Hawaii and Robert Hall, was beginning its construction, Lewis had left the chain and the phones of the now-bankrupt parent company, Network Cinema Corporation were disconnected.
The Maui Theatre launched on May 2, 1974 with the film, “Vanishing Wilderness”. The theatre was listed as for lease in early-1977 and later that year became part of Consolidated Amusement Company Ltd. Circuit. It appears to have ceased operations in January of 1992 just shy of its 20th anniversary. It was then used for a house of worship.
