The Modernes Lichtspielhaus was opened in 1912 and was operated by Josef Halm. In 1934 Wilhelm Windeisen & Peter Arsleff took over the operation. Later the cinema was enlarged to 550-seats to the plans of architect Ernst Huhn. It is not known if the cinema was damaged during World War II.
In 1957 it was enlarged to 900-seats and a stage for live performances was added. The Modernes Theater was closed in 1970 and was converted into a supermarket. By 2017 it was a hardware store.
