Built as a theatre in 1899 and designed by the architecural firm Sharp & Waller. The auditorium was gutted in early-1937, transforming it from a three tier plus boxes theatre into a two tier Art Deco style cinema.
Films ceased and the Albert Cinema in July 1972 and it became a bingo hall for many years. The auditorium is still much as it was after the conversion. The foyer spaces however has been significantly altered.
In March 2007 the independently operated Kingsway bingo operation was threatened with closure and this eventually happened later in the year. Plans were proposed to use the building as an upmarket bar and restaurant, which in 2008 was open as the Barracuda Bar.

is this cinema still standing empty or has it now been converted? Does anyone know it’s current condition or the owners of the building please.
thanks
jon
The Albert is still standing althought the bingo operators Walkers have now closed it. Until the conversion to bingo the cinema was used by the two local operatic societies for stage productions- prior to the opening of the (less superior) Civic hall/theatre further down the street. I believe the auditorium is pretty much intact.
Photographs of the Albert, just prior to it being gutted to form a large pub (September 2007) here:–

umbrella; If you click on the ‘Function’ heading in the Theatre Guide (above left), it will bring up 103 (to date) former cinema buildings listed on this site that are currently in use as bingo clubs. There are of course many more, where bingo has now ceased and the buildings are in other uses, such as bars, nightclubs, churches or even just listed as ‘Unknown’ if the property is currently not used for anything.
