Gaiety Cinema

The first and only reference to this cinema, situated on the main road a short distance to the north of Liverpool city centre in the Vauxhall district, is in ‘Kinematograph Weekly’ on 13th May 1913, which reported that the Gaiety Cinema would be open to the public in a few days. The auditorium, including the balcony over-hanging the rear stalls, seated some 1,000 patrons.

It is not known who owned the cinema at the beginning but, by 1915, it was being operated by Gaiety (Liverpool) Ltd.

RCA sound was installed circa 1930. In 1936 the Gaiety Cinema was acquired by Stanley Grimshaw, managing director of Byrom Picture Houses Ltd. The cinema now had 966 seats.

Into the 1950’s the Gaiety Cinema continued to offer later runs of G-B/Rank releases together with off-circuit releases. Inevitably, this wasn’t sufficient to keep it viable, and the Gaiety Cinema closed on 14th May 1960 with “That Kind of Woman”, starring Sophia Loren & “Thunder in the Sun” starring Robert Mitchum.

The building was subsequently demolished during a major redevelopment of the area.
