Regent Cinema

Located in March, Cambridgeshire, adjacent to the Palace Cinema. Originally on this site was the Pavilion, a wooden structure which was used for film shows. It was destroyed by fire during World War I.

The Public Hall was built on the site in 1921. By 1929 it was taken over by Joseph Collingwood and opened as the Regent Cinema with 425-seats. It had a 20ft wide proscenium, The stage was 26ft deep and there were five dressing rooms. It was equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system. It became part of the Harry Bancroft Circuit. The Regent Cinema was closed in 1959.

It was converted into the Marcam Hall, a multi-use venue which had roller skating in the basement, which later became a live music club attracting the stars at that time. The upstairs catered for dancing and bingo, operating as the Roxy Dance Hall. On 31st December 1965 a massive fire destroyed the building. The fire caused an explosion, injuring the manager who was securing the building for the night after a successful New Year’s Eve event. He was badly burnt.

In the 1980’s flats were built on the site.
