Palace Cinema

Located in the north Liverpool district of Bootle, on Marsh Lane close to Stanley Road and Marsh Lane railway station (today renamed Bootle New Strand railway station). The Bootle Picture Palace was a purpose built cinema, designed by Southport based architect George E. Tonge. It opened on 19th October 1912 with 1,000-seats (some in the front stalls on long wooden benches), and all seating was on a single raked floor. In 1929 the operator was George Prince Circuit and it was equipped with Western Electric(WE) sound on 29th July 1929 when the first ‘talkie to be screened was “Old Arizona” starring Edmund Lowe. It was re-named Palace Cinema.

On 18th July 1954 it was equipped with CinemaScope and the first film to be screened in that process was Dale Robertson in “Sitting Bull”. The Palace Cinema was closed by the George Prince Circuit on 26th April 1958 with Robert Mitchum in “River of No Return” & Jeff Morrow in “Copper Sky”.

The building was purchased by the Bootle Social Centre For Children and following internal and external alterations it opened as their social centre in December 1959. They later vacated the building around 1997 and it was demolished in Autumn of 1997 to make way for an access road.
