Located at the corner of W. Nanjing Road and Shaanxi Road N. Around 1938/1939 the Spanish consulate building was transformed into the Uptown Theatre. It was designed as a single screen cinema to the plans of architect Charles Henry Gonda. In 1935 the Uptown Theatre was re-named Ping'an Theatre.

In 2005 the cinema was closed and remodelled into apartments with retail stores on the ground floor.
