The Midtown Art opened in 1926 as the West End Lyric Theatre and seated 966. When it first opened as an independent neighborhood house it was located in a bustling neighborhood on Delmar just a block east of Kingshighway. The theatre thrived until the owner passed away in the mid 50’s and the theatre was sold to the Mosley’s who converted the balcony into a second theatre and started showing adult fare in both theatres.
The neighborhood was on a steady decline and the the Midtown Art closed quietly in 1967. In the late 1980’s the neighborhood started a rebound and a lot of redevelopment took place, which took care of the Midtown Art Theatre too.

I am dying to know where this is. I am a mile and a half west right now and drive by there every night. If there is a theatre in great shape down there I am blind. In any case 4938 Delmar isn’t in the city property base. I will drive by tonight after work and see.
The Midtown Art was not the Upland; it was was once the West End Lyric/West End. As the Midtown Art, it operated from June 1965 to September 1966.
And, a disappointment for those looking for the structure. It has long been demolished.
It is a parking lot.
