Cinema Hall

In Shanklin, on the Isle of Wight, the Cinema Hall is thought to have opened around the time of the First World War (though it was not listed in the 1914 Kinematograph Year Book).

It was housed on the first floor of an existing building occupied by the Co-Op since it was built in the early-1900’s. It was operated by ‘Tubby’ Poole, and ‘Pedlar’ Palmer played the piano.

According to the 1923 Kinematograph Year Book there were, at that time, two shows nightly, and two changes of programme each week. It was operated by the Co-Op Society.

The Playhouse Cinema had opened in 1920 (see separate Cinema Treasures entry). This appears to have adversely affected the Cinema Hall, and it closed during the 1920’s. (It was not listed in the 1927 Kinematograph Year Book.)

The building still stands. A Co-op store occupies the ground floor and ‘upper room’ former cinema was unused but intact in 1998.
