Located in Colywn Bay, Denbighshire. Catlin’s Arcadia Theatre was built by Will Catlin to house his ‘Follies’ shows. It was opened around 1919. It was soon re-named Arcadia Cinema. It had a 30ft wide proscenium and a fully equipped stage. In 1928 it was equipped with a Fitton & Haley 2 manual, 15 stops concert organ which was opened by organist John Wright in 1929. The organ had a piano and effects facility. Around 1930 it was equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system. In 1931 it was listed as operating as Catlin’s Arcadia Winter Gardens and Picture House. There was also a cafĂ© operating in the building.

In April 1937 the Arcadia Cinema was taken over by David Forrester Theatres Ltd. Around 1940 it was taken over by Mercer’s Cinema Circuit. In 1954 it was equipped with CinemaScope and had a 26ft wide screen. In 1967 it was taken over by the Wedgewood Cinemas Ltd. chain and was re-named Wedgewood Cinema. It was closed on 17th February 1979 with John Travolta in “Grease”. It was soon demolished and offices for the Post Office have been built on the site.

I visited this Theatre quite a few times when I was at college in the Colwyn Bay Area. As I remember it it had a Terraced frontage, set back from the pavement, with full length glass doors (French Windows) The Auditorium was square and was on one level. It still had double courting seats in it. One had top be very careful where one sat as some of the seating rows were not properly fixed to the floor.
